Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Acetic acid has been determined to be readily biodegradable on the basis of a weight of evidence approach.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

There are no robust studies for biodegradation available for acetic acid. The DAR uses a number of non-standard studies to support a determination that acetic acid is readily biodegradable. In addition, they comment that the use of the salt form sodium acetate is used as a reference substance in OECD screening tests for ready biodegradability.

A QSAR has also been generated to support the determination that acetic acid is readily biodegradable.
