Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Titanium sponge powder (finest particle size distribution imported and used) has a mean particle size of 860µm. This sample shows a low dustiness (33.58 mg/g) and according to the MPPD model almost no deposition on the pulmonary region (PU) = 0.01% of the inhaled material.

Additional information

Based on the MPPD model, the following conclusions can be drawn for risk characterisation purposes:

(i) Titanium (metal powder) has a limited deposition ability in the human respiratory tract: less than 54 % of airborne material is estimated to deposit. The rest of the airborne material is either not inhaled at all due to physical phenomena related to air streams and turbulences close to the mouth or simply to the fact that particles are also exhaled (i.e. not deposited).

(ii) only about 0.01 % or less of inhaled material is predicted to be deposited in the pulmonary region (PU), whereas the material deposited in the tracheobronchial (TB) and the extrathoracic region (Head) may be assumed to be cleared to the GI tract (i.e., by mucociliary escalation and subsequent swallowing)
