Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Waiving of study:
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, a Bioaccumulation test in aquatic species (required in section 9.3.2) does not need to be conducted as sodium hypochlorite has a low potential for bioaccumulation (calculated log Kow = -3.42) and decomposes in water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Hypochlorite does not bioaccumulate or bioconcentrate due to its high water solubility, its low Pow (-3.42) and high reactivity.

The concentration of hypochlorite in the environment, is modelled by Vandepitte and Schowanek and is estimated to drop down to “zero” within the first minutes after release in the sewer.
