Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The partition coefficient (log Pow) of butenes ranges from 2.31 to 2.4. The data were reported for the members of the butenes category: but-1-ene (CAS 106-98-9), 2-butene (CAS 107-01-7) and 2-methylpropene (CAS 115-11-7).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
2.35
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

The handbook by Hansch et al. (1995) is critically evaluated and considered reliable and suitable for use as a key study for this endpoint. The partition coefficient (log Pow) of the butenes ranges from 2.31 to 2.4.

The partition coefficient (log Pow) of 2-methylpropene is 2.34 (Hansch 1995). The log Pow of 2-butene ranges from 2.31 to 2.33 (Hansch 1995). The partition coefficient (log Pow) of but-1-ene is 2.4 (Hansch 1995).The mean of the log partition coefficient values for the butenes is 2.35 and this has been used to complete the 'key value for chemical safety assessment'.
