Description of key information

A supporting study on photoirritation resulted in severe photoirritation in rabbits when exposed to gas oil intermediate and UV A light.

Additional information

In a primary dermal photoirritation study five female New Zealand White rabbits were exposed to 0.3 mL of gas oil intermediate for one hour and exposed to 6.06 hours of 10J/cm^2 to UV A light. Animals were observed 30 minutes, 24, 48, 72 hours after UV A exposure (ARCO, 1991b).

A positive response was achieved with the 1% 8-MOP (a known photoirritant). The Irritation Index (based on 24 and 72 hours) is 5.4 for 1% 8-MOP exposed to UV A light and 0.0 for 1% 8-MOP not exposed to UV A light. The photoirritation for 1% 8-MOP is 5.4, therefore the 1% 8-MOP is considered to be a moderate photoirritant. The irritation index is 7.0 for the Gas Oil Intermediate exposed to UV A light and 1.0 for gas oil intermediate is 6.0. Based on these values gas oil intermediate is considered to be a severe photoirritant under the conditions of this test.

Additional data on other studies are presented in the dossier (DGMK, 1993; Jungen et al., 1995).
