Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

The biodegradability of 1-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (CAS 872-50-4) in water is assessed based on experimental data:

- In a study conducted according to OECD guideline 301C, using a mixed inoculum according to internal Japanese test standards, elimination was 73% after 28 days based on O2-consumption, indicating the substance to be readlily biodegradable according to OECD criteria (MITI, Japan, 1992).These data were selected as key data.

- Furthermore, the substance turned out to be readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria) in a study, published by Fischer & Gerike (1979) who investigated the biodegradability of different chemicals in several test systems. In tests similar to OECD guideline 301B, 301C and 301E, degradation rates after 14 to 28 days were above 90% each, related to the DOC removal, CO2 evolution or biological oxygen demand, respectively. These data support the findings of the key study.

- In addition, a non-guideline study resulted in an elimination of 50 % after 4 days in two activated sludge samples, with a 50 % degradation after 4 days, based on O2 consumption (Křížek et al., 2015), further supporting the key data.

Conclusion:

Based on the available experimental results, 1-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (CAS 872-50-4) is assessed to be readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria).
