Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The rate and extent to which chromium (III) oxide produces soluble (bio)available ionic and other chromium-bearing species in environmental media is limited. Further, the poor solubility of chromium (III) oxide is expected to determine its behaviour and fate in the environment, including its low potential for bioaccumulation. Proprietary studies are not available for chromium (III) oxide. The fate of chromium (III) oxide in the environment is evaluated by assessing the fate of its ecotoxicologically relevant moiety, the chromium (III) ion, and read-across to data available for other chromium (III) substances is applied.

Studies of the bioaccumulation of other Cr(III) compounds in different aquatic species indicate that the bioaccumulation potential is low and uptake seems to be limited by the poor solubility of chromium (III) compounds in the environment. Further, there does not seem to be any evidence for biomagnification.

Thus, the available bioaccumulation factors for chromium (III) indicate a low potential for bioaccumulation in aquatic environments. Taking into account the poor solubility in environmental media, the bioaccumulation potential of chromium (III) oxide can safely be expected to be low. Please refer to the respective endpoint summary for soluble chromium (III) substances (“Cr_Bioaccumulation: aquatic / sediment) for further information.
