Hydrolysis

Based on the structure of tetrahydrofuran no hydrolysable groups are present and therefore hydrolysis of tetrahydrofuran is not expected to occur.

Biodegradation in water: screening test

Several studies have been identified as having assessed the biodegradation in water (screening test). The key ready biodegradability study concluded that tetrahydrofuran did not readily biodegrade within 28 days. However after prolonged exposure, it was found to be inherently biodegradable. The supporting studies confirm that tetrahydrofuran is inherently biodegradable.

Further degradation testing does not need to be conducted as the chemical safety assessment does not indicate a need for further investigation.

Bioaccumulation

The bioaccumulation test is not required as tetrahydrofuran has a low potential for bioaccumulation (log Kow ≤ 3).

Adsorption/desorption:In accordance with column 2 of REACH annex VIII, the adsorption/desorption screening test does not have to be conducted as tetrahydrofuran has a low octanol water partition coefficient. (QSAR calculations confirm that tetrahydrofuran has a low potential to adsorb).
