Description of key information

EC50 (120 h, cell number, Nitzschia linearis) = 2430 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
2 430 mg/L

Additional information

Three studies are available from published literature on acute toxicity of sodium chloride to algae and cyanobacteria. One additional study (Setter 1982) looks at mechanisms of toxicity from changing sodium chloride concentration in the media (i.e. uses pre-adapted cultures).

The diatom Nitzschia linearis was found most sensitive with an EC50 (120 h, cell number) of 2430 mg/L. Unfortunately, the article does not provide sufficient information to conclude on a No Observed Effect Concentration for Nitzschia linearis.
