Description of key information

Hydrolysis is not expected to be an important aquatic fate process for acetonitrile. Acetonitrile is readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life for hydrolysis:
150 000 yr
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

Hydrolysis is considered to be unimportant to the aquatic fate of acetonitrile, at the pH ranges normal for natural water (Ellington et al. 1988). The half-life for acetonitrile in water has been estimated to be >150,000 years based on a hydrolysis rate constant at pH 7 and 25 deg C of 5.8 x 10-3 Mhr (Howard, 1991).
