Sodium carbonate is a white solid with a melting point of 851˚C and a relative density of 2.52 -2.53 at 20˚C. It is well soluble in water (212.5 g/l at 20˚C) and insoluble in most organic solvents. In aqueous solution, sodium carbonate undergoes a complete dissociation in respective ions and has an alkaline pH. The substance is a stable inorganic salt and based on its structure and the lack of chemical groups associated with explosive and/or oxidising properties, is considered to be non-explosive and non-oxidising. Based on the experience in manufacture and handling, sodium carbonate is known not to react with water and not to possess pyrophoric properties. In a standard flammability test, the substance melted in contact with the flame of the gas burner and kept white. After the source of ignition was removed, no propagation of combustion occurred, indicating that sodium carbonate is non-flammable.

Particle size distribution measurements have been performed on 3 different samples of sodium carbonate. Mass median aerodynamic diameters (MMAD) were 198, 694 and 1580 μm, while the D90 varied from 257 to 1598 μm. Aerodynamic Diameter of a particle is the diameter of a sphere which would have the same settling limit velocity. Mass Median Diameter is the diameter for which 50% of the material mass has a larger particle diameter, and 50% of the material mass has a smaller particle diameter. D90 is the diameter for which 90% of the material mass has a smaller diameter.
