Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Sieve test data for the Lead Registrant's crystalline grades of copper sulphate pentahydrate in the size range 1 - 50 mm show that < 0.01% w/w of the test material is less than 125 µm. Laser diffraction data for the Lead Registrant's microcrystalline grade show the following volume-based particle size distribution: D(v,0.1) 80.7 µm; D (v,0.5) 256 µm; D(v,0.9) 516 µm. The corresponding number-based distribution is as follows: D(n,0.1) 4.67 µm; D (n,0.5) 6.15 µm; D(n,0.9) 14.5 µm. Joint registrants that produce or import copper sulphate pentahydrate that meets this specifiction are able to refer to the Lead Registrant's granulometry data for the purpose of REACH registration.

Additional information

The Lead Registrant produces the following three grades of crystalline copper sulphate pentahydrate:

"Big": 5 to 50 mm, approx.

"Grain": 1 to 15 mm, approx.

"Minute": 1 to 5 mm, approx.

A sieve test on the "grain" grade showed that < 0.01% w/w of the test material is less than 125 µm. On this basis it is concluded the test material does not present an inhalation hazard. As the lower end of the size range for the "grain" grade is the same as that for the "minute" grade and is significantly smaller than that of the "big" grade, this conclusion is considered to be applicable to all three grades.

The Lead Registrant also produces a microcrystalline grade of copper sulphate pentahydrate (snow technical grade).

D(v, 0.1), D(v,0.5) and D(v,0.9) values for the volume-rated distribution were determined to be 80.7, 256 and 516 µm, respectively.

D(n,0.1), D(n,0.5) and D(n,0.9) values for the number-rated distribution were determined to be 4.67, 6.15 and 14.5 µm, respectively.

Joint registrants that produce or import copper sulphate pentahydrate that meets this specifiction are able to refer to the Lead Registrant's granulometry data for the purpose of REACH registration.
