Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The three main constituents of the Natural Complex Substance (NCS) Nutmeg oil are the bicyclic terpenes, alpha- and beta-pinene and sabinene which together form half of the NCS. The remainder is made up by a range of monocyclic terpenes and terpenoids. The asssessment of the biodegradation of Nutmeg oil is based on its constituents. The constituents, comprising 94% of the composition of this NCS, are in the category of readily biodegradable substances. Therefore, Nutmeg oil is considered readily biodegradable.

Additional information

Nutmeg oil is a Natural Complex Substance (NCS) for which more than 90 % of the constituents is identified. The three main constituents are the bicyclic terpenes, alpha- and beta-pinene and sabinene which together form half of the NCS. The remainder is made up by a range of monocyclic terpenes and terpenoids.

As no valid empirical results from a test for the ready biodegradation of Nutmeg oil are available, the assessment is based on its constituents (present at or above 1%). The assumption is that if the constituents of the NCS are readily biodegradable, the NCS itself is readily biodegradable as well.

With the exception of one minor constituent, all constituents are readily biodegradable. For one minor constituent (1.2%) the criteria for 'ready' were barely missed (53% instead of 60%). For 5 constituents (17%) the ready biodegradability is based on structurally related substances.

The constituents, comprising 94% of the composition of this NCS, are in the category of ready biodegradable substances. Therefore, Nutmeg oil is considered readily biodegradable.
