Description of key information

The true density of solid slag is approximately 2.7 - 4 g/cm³ at ambient temperature.

Apperant density: 1.9 - 3 g/cm³
Bulk density: 0.7 - 1.4 g/cm³
From the same molten slag, the product obtained by rapid cooling (GBS) is less dense than the product obtained by slow cooling (ABS)

Additional information

The density of solid slag is 3 - 4 kg/L at ambient temperature (Krajewsky and Krueger 1984).

BOS has a density >3.2 g/cm³ and a bulk density 1.5 - 1.6 g/cm³. (FEhS 2000 (Geiseler, Drissen, Kuehn, Schrey))The density of SMS is 3 g/cm³, the bulk density is 1.4 g/ cm³. (FEhS (Geiseler) 1997)

The density of EAF C is 3.4 g/cm³, the bulk density is 1.5 g/ cm³. (FEhS (Geiseler) 1997)

EAF S was measured to be 3.08 g/cm³ (3.14…3.18 for LMA 0 - 8 mm and LMA 0 - 32 mm), and the bulk density 1.2 g/cm³ (Parviainen,Tikkakoski, Kallio, Holappa, Kujala, Roininen 2007)

For granulated blast furnace slag (GBS) the following data are reported by Euroslag (2003):

·                           true density: 2.796 - 3.070 g/cm³

·                           apparent density: 2.021 - 2.843 g/cm³

·                           bulk density: 0.689 - 1.427 g/cm³ (porosity: 2.5 - 31.2 % v/v, grain size < 0.5 mm: 3.6 - 78.6 % w/w, grain size < 3.2 mm: 81.1 - 100.0 % w/w)

These data are supported by results of Ehrenberg (2001), who measured densities of GBS of 2.9 g/cm³, and a bulk density of 1.3 g/cm³.

GBS consists predominantly of glass phases. Due to the low order of the molecules and ions in the liquid, the product obtained by rapid cooling (GBS) is less compact than the product obtained by slow cooling (ABS) with tight clusters in crystal lattices. For slag from the same manufacturer, the compacted apparent density of ABS is 3 g/cm3, the compacted apparent density of GBS is 2.7 g/cm3(Tossavainen and Lind 2005).
