Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, the activated sludge respiration inhibition study (required in Section 9.1.4) does not need to be conducted as the substance is readily biodegradable and the applied test concentrations are in the range that can be expected in the influent to a sewage treatment plant.

However for the purpose of setting a PNEC the Bringmann and Kuhn (1980) study with Pseudomonas putida and citric acid has been selected since no other reliable study is available (R.10 guidance).

The available data as read-across from citric acid, is sufficient to fulfil the information requirements for this endpoint. Information available in the public domain on tests carried out on other salts of this metal indicates that the calcium ions are not expected to contribute to the toxicity of the substance. Additionally, the substance will dissociate when in solution, so the test organisms will be exposed to the citrate and the metal ions separately.

Therefore, the hazard assessment for trisodium citrate can reasonably be based on the properties of citric acid.
