Description of key information

CaSi and the (slowly) soluble constituents, pure calcium (as Ca2+) and pure amorphous silica are known to be non toxic substances in fresh water and marine sediments.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

CaSi alloys are poorly water soluble inorganic substances and therefore can enter sediments if released directly to aquatic environment. Adsorption of soluble constituent to sediment is not likely or remarkable. Pure calcium (as Ca2+) and pure amorphous silica are known to be non toxic substances in fresh water and marine sediments.

Substances that are potentially capable of depositing on sediments to a significant extent have to be tested and assessed for toxicity to sediment-dwelling organisms. Sediment testing is not regarded necessary or important for CaSi.
