Additional information

A number of reliable acute toxicity studies in fish have been carried out using multiple species, both fresh and salt water. A number of these have data for the required 96 hour exposure period. All the data available span a remarkably small range of values strongly suggesting a mode of action based on narcosis rather than a substance specific toxicity. The study reporting the lowest LD50 is used to derive the key parameter, which is also a good quality study for freshwater fish. This study also provides the lowest value from the 96hr studies. A second study providing data on saltwater fish is also considered reliable and is used as the source for the key parameter for marine water fish. Even data available from sources that are not regarded as robust, provide consistent support for the reliable studies. It can be concluded that 2 -butoxyethanol is practically non-toxic to fish over the acute timeframe.
