Description of key information

The inhibition of the degredation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The inhibitory effect of 1,3,5-trioxane on microorganisms was determined in two studies according to OECD guideline 209 (Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test). The first study showed a respiration inhibition of microorganisms using activated sludge from a municipal sewage treatment plant. The EC10 and EC20 were obtained at 98 mg/L and 270 mg/L, respectively. In the second study activated sludge from BASF`s sewage treatment plant was used. The results of this study showed no effect up to the highest test concentration of 500 mg/L after 3 h total exposure. However, since a adaption to the test substance of the bacteria from the industrial sludge can not be excluded, the results from the first investigation was taken into account for the PNEC calculation.
