Description of key information

The lowest effect concentration was observed in a test according to OECD Guideline 202 (Acute Toxicity for Daphnia) with partially unsaturated TEA Esterquat. The 48 h EC 50 of the test substance was determined to be 2.23 mg/l for Daphnia magna.

In a study conducted according to EU Method C.2 (Acute Toxicity forDaphnia) the 48 h EC 50 of the test substance partially unsaturated TEA-Esterquat for Daphnia magna was determined to be 2.23 mg/l based on estimated concentration (corrected for recovery of 93%).

Six further reliable studies are available for partially unsaturated TEA-Esterquat performed according to OECD Guideline 202 or EU-Method C.2 for acute toxicity to Daphnia magna. Only two of these studies were performed with analytical control.

The 48 h EC50of partially unsaturated TEA-Esterquat to Daphnia magna was studied under static conditions. Immobilisation and sublethal effects were observed daily. Analytical control measurements were performed by means of photometric analysis. The 48 EC50was 5.067 mg a.i. /L.

The above findings are in line with the results of the following study.The 48 h-acute toxicity of partially unsaturated TEA-Esterquat was investigated in a study conducted according to OECD Guideline 202 (Daphnia sp. Acute Immobilisation Test). Under static conditions, Daphnia magna were exposed to control and test chemical at nominal concentration of 0.2, 0.44, 0.97, 2.13, 4.69, 10.3, 22.7 mg/L (mean measured concentration: 0.09, 0.2, 0.43, 0.95, 2.0, 4.6, 10 mg/L). The mean concentrations during the test (mean of samples taken at 0 h and 48 h) were between 34.7 % and 51.7 % of nominal (average 44.5 %). Immobilization and sublethal effects were observed daily. The 48– hour EC50 based on mean measured concentrations was 6.05 mg/L test material.

48 h EC50values based on nominal concentrations determined by OECD 202 or EU Method C.2 are reported for EC50 (48 h): 2.78 mg/L act. ingr. (nominal); EC50 (48 h): 4.72 mg/L act. ingr. (nominal): (EC50 (48 h): ca. 6.65 mg/L act. ingr. (nominal) and EC50 (48 h) ca. 8.25 mg/L act. ingr. (nominal).

In two studies the stock solutions were heated up to 50 °C for 0.5 – 1h. These studies, although performed according to OECD 202 were not used for this assessment, because a significant amount of hydrolysis might have taken place.
