Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Substance: Slags lead smelting

“Slags lead smelting are iron silicate based slags that are produced to remove high melting point impurities during the smelting of lead bearing materials from primary and secondary sources, including intermediates. The iron:silicon ratio is traditionally controlled and further additives are used, such as calcium oxide, to produce a low viscosity slag. Reductants are added during smelting to ensure the slag is low in recoverable metal values.”

EC number/ EINECS No.

CAS No.

Slags, lead smelting are a black brown to dark grey, odourless solid (at 20°C and 101.3 kPA) in the form of particulates or coarse lumps. The density will vary according to the precise composition of the sample. The density of the tested sample was 3.55 g/cm3. The melting point is shown to be > 500°C. Consequently, boiling point and vapour pressure cannot be determined. The water solubility test shows dissolution of metal ions although the test results should be used with caution.

There is no evidence of physical hazards in terms of (auto)flammability, explosivity and oxidizing properties.

Studies regarding flash point, partition coefficient, surface tension and particle size distribution do not need to be conducted.

Waivers are in place for all these endpoints.
