Description of key information

Potassium formate is a colourless crystalline, hygroscopic solid with no odour. It has a melting point of 167 °C and decomposes >167 °C. The density is 1.19 g/mL and aqueous surface tension 72 mN/m at 20 °C (1 g/L). A viscosity determination is not required for solids. The solubility in water is >1000 g/L - the CRC handbook reports it to be 3310 g/kg - and is thereby defined as completely soluble in water so the OECD methods for determining solubility are not applicable. The partition coefficient (Log Kow) was measured to be -2.3 (pH 7; 23 °C). The dissociation constant of a structural analogue (calcium diformate) is 3.79 at 20 °C and the pKa of formic acid is reported to be 3.75 at 20 oC in Pattys Toxicology - potassium formate is the corresponding salt of formic acid. Granulometry does not need to be conducted because the substance is market or used in a non-solid or granular form.

Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products: the study does not need to be conducted as the stability of the substance is considered to be critical. A flash point measurement is not applicable to solids, the test item was assessed not to be flammable and no self-ignition was observed below 400 °C. Potassium formate does not contain chemical groups associated with explosive properties so is therefore is not explosive. Due to the structural composition of the substance it is not considered to be oxidising. The test item is not classified under any EU CLP physical hazard endpoint.

The vapour pressure is expected to be low since the substance is a salt - a vapour pressure of 0.00011 Pa at 25 °C was calculated with the modified Grain method, thus an experimental determination is waived.
