Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No data are avaialble on the toxicity of dimethyl terephthalate to other above-ground organisms.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

This data point has been waived for dimethyl terephthalate on the grounds that contamination of the terrestrial compartment is unlikely, that DMT is readily biodegradable and that primary exposure of terrestrial vertebrates is therefore not expected to occur. Moreover, the log Kow of dimethyl terephthalate is less than 3.0, indicating that its bioconcentration potential is negligible and there is consequently no significant risk of secondary poisoning of other above-ground organisms via earthworms or fish. Studies on mammals have been provided in Chapter 5 of this document. DMT is not acutely toxic, is not an irritant and is not mutagenic, carcinogenic or a reproductive toxin. DMT is also of low toxicity following repeated dosing over study periods of up to two years. Under these circumstances, data for the effects of dimethyl terephthalate on other above-ground organisms are considered unnecessary.
