Description of key information

Sodium sulfite has a melting point of 911 °C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

For the evaluation of this endpoint data from the CRC handbook were used as key information supported by information from three additional handbooks. According to the REACH regulation ("ECHA, guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment - chapter R.7.a"), it is allowed to use specific handbook data as a reliable data source. Useful reference books and data compliations containing peer reviewed physico-chemical data include the CRC handbook of Chemistry and Physics.

According to the CRC handbook, sodium sulphite has a melting point of 911 °C. The other references indicate that sodium sulfite decomposes before melting (at 617°C). However, no data are available under which conditions the melting/decomposition point was determined.
