Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Biodegradation: 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate is readily biodegradable in OECD screening test OECD 301 C (MITI-test): 92 to 100% based on BOD and 86 to 87% based on TOC removal after 14 days.

Abiotic degradation by hydrolysis under environmental conditions of 2 -hydroxyethyl methacrylate is low.

Bioaccumulation: log Pow of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate is 0.42, therefore bioaccumulation of 2 -hydroxyethyl methacrylate is not expected.

Adsorption to soil and sediment is low due to log Pow.

Additional information

2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate has high water solubility (>100 g/L at 20 °C), a low vapour pressure (0.08 hPa at 20 °C), and low log Kow (0.42 at 25 °C). The substance has a low potential for adsorption to soil or sediments or bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms, and a low potential to volatilize from water or soil to the atmosphere. The substance is hydrolytically stable in water under acidic conditions, and is susceptible to hydrolysis under alkaline conditions (half-life 10.9 days at pH 9 at 25 °C).

2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate meets the criteria of ready biodegradability in OECD 301 C screening tests.
