Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

The substance is readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria).

This assessment is based on a Read-across approach to the shorter-chain FADMA C8-10 (67359-57-3, now handled under EC 909-125-3) and the longer-chain FADMA C12 (3007-53-2). As these both substances are readily biodegradable, and as the target substance FADMA C10 (14433-76-2) is structurally a close homolouge, having the same functional groups, it is justified to predict, that the target substance (14433-76-2) is readily biodegradable as well.

Additional information

The test substance itself (short name FADMA C10) has not been tested in the standard OECD 301 screening tests for biodegradation in water. 

However, OECD 301-results are available for a 50:50 mixture of FADMA C8 and FADMA C10, demonstrating > 60 % ultimate biodegradation [28 d], as well as for FADMA C12 showing to be readily biodegradable in OECD 301 B, exhibiting 86 % ultimate biodegradation in 28 days and fulfilling the 10d window.

In addition (supporting information), a reliable guideline test with FADMA C10 for biodegradation in natural soil is available demonstrating very rapid, ultimate degradation (> 70 % [14C] CO2 in 4 days).

Taken all evidence together, it is concluded that FADMA C10 is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.
