Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The aerobic biodegradation of DMSO has been assessed through OECD Guideline 303 A (Simulation Test - Aerobic Sewage Treatment. A: Activated Sludge Units) and EU Method C.10 (Biodegradation: Activated Sludge Simulation Test).

This higher-tier test, with 90.4 % of the substance degraded after 32 days for the concentration of 65 mg/L of DMSO, confirmed the good potential of biodegradation under specific conditions. Nevertheless, it is recommended to be careful about its concentration in effluent because toxic effects can appear.
