4,4'-sulfonyldiphenol showed no biodegradation under aerobic conditions in tests conducted using river and seawater. Under anaerobic condition however the removal of 4,4'-sulfonyldiphenol in sediment reached about 60% after 60 days.

Although 4,4'-sulphonydiphenol is assessed as not readily biodegradable, there is evidence that the substance can be degraded by microbial populations after acclimatisation (BASF, 2006). This is confirmed by studies demonstrating high removal of 4,4'-sulphonydiphenol from wastewater treatment plants (Qian Sun et al., Environmental Pollution 225: 542 -549, 2017; M. Cesen et al., Science of the Total Environment, 616 -617: 744 -752, 2018).

4,4'-sulphonyldiphenol was rapidly biodegraded in soils with observed half-lives of < 1 day.
