Description of key information

The72 h ErL50 for Patchouli ext. based on nominal loading rates was 73 mg/L. This value can be used directly for classification but is unsuitable for derivation of PNEC since partitioning of components in the environment will make the comparison with PEC meaningless.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
73 mg/L

Additional information

Due to the low aqueous solubility and complex nature of the test item for the purposes of the test, the test item was prepared as a Water Accommodated Fraction (WAF). Following a preliminary range-finding test, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was exposed to WAFs of the test item over a range of nominal loading rates of 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 mg/l.

The EL50 values for inhibition of biomass (EbL50) and specific growth rate (ErL50) after 72 hours were 26 and 73 mg/l, respectively based on nominal loading rates. After 96 hours they were 26 and >100 mg/l, respectively.

The preferred observational endpoint in this study is algal growth rate inhibition because it is not dependent on the test design (ECHA guidance Chapter R.7b v1.1). Thus the 72-h ErC50 is used for classification purposes.
