Discussion

The key study in freshwater fish is an OECD 203 guideline study in rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) with an LC50-96h of 20 mg/L.

There is no data on marine fish, but studies with the common metabolite of the category lower methacrylates, methacrylic acid (MAA), indicate that marine species are not expected to be more sensitive to methacrylates than freshwater species. The marine ecotoxicity of MAA was investigated in a series of experiments with marine fish, invertebrates and algae. There was no evidence that MAA was more toxic to marine species. Quite to the contrary the marine organisms tended to be of equal or lower sensitivity than the corresponding freshwater test organisms. The 96 h LC50 in the marine fish Scophthalmus maximus (Turbot) was 833 mg/L. The corresponding freshwater 96h-LC50 in the key study with MAA was 85 mg/L in Oncorhynchus mykiss (rainbow trout).
