Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

No reliable studies have been identified on the toxicity of biphenyl to terrestrial animals including birds. The only relevant study was a seedling emergence and seedling growth test with lettuce (Lactuca sativa). Based on column 2 of Annex IX and X of the REACH regulation, toxicity to terrestrial organisms shall be proposed if the results of the chemical safety assessment indicate the need to investigate further the effects of the substance and/or relevant degradation products on terrestrial organisms. Based on the outcome of the environmental safety assessment there is currently no need for further testing in this direction. Similarly, there is no need for toxicity testing with birds if the mammalian dataset allows derivation of a PNEC for birds and the chemical safety assessment (using the mammalian-based PNEC for birds) does not indicate the need for refinement, which appears to be the case for biphenyl.
