Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The water solubility of biphenyl was determined using the flask method (Wauchope and Getzen, 1972) and reported to be 7.35 mg/L at 25 °C. This study is considered as a key study. The review paper of Pearlman et al (1984) summarizes nine critically-reviewed and acceptable water solubility values ranging from 38.6 to 55 micromole/L (5.95 - 8.48 mg/L).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
7.35 mg/L
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

Although the column elution method is the method of preference for substances exhibiting water solubility less than10 mg/L, the flask method used by Wauchope and Getzen (1972) is considered acceptable for biphenyl as longer equilibrium periods (up to three weeks) were applied.
