Description of key information

The standard information requirement for viscosity at 20 °C is waived, on the basis that the substance is a solid at this temperature. The measured dynamic viscosities of molten biphenyl decrease with increasing temperature, and range from 0.95 mPa*sec to 0.32 mPa*sec over the temperature range of 100 - 225 °C

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The standard information requirement for REACH is a determination of viscosity at 20°C. Because biphenyl is a solid at room temperature, measurement is not feasible. Therefore, any further testing can be waived. However, since biphenyl is predominantly used as a liquid at higher temperatures, the viscosity values reported by Hedley et al. (1970) are considered relevant for the dossier.
