Description of key information

The long-chain alkyl methacrylate esters are slightly irritating to skin and not irritating to eyes.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not irritating)

Additional information

Skin irritation

Test results in rabbits are available for various esters covering dodecyl methacrylate to octadecyl methacrylate. There is slight irritating potential which is decreasing with growing chain length of the alcohol moiety.

In conclusion, the long-chain alkyl methacrylate esters have slightly skin irritating properties but have not to be classified as skin irritants.

Eye irritation

In two valid tests in rabbits and further studies with limited validity, there is no evidence for eye irritating properties of the long-chain alkyl methacrylate esters.

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: slightly irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to EU as well as UN-GHS criteria no classification is warranted for the skin and eye irritation.
