Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The Self heating temperature of coconut shell charcoal has been determined (by an in ferro method with in silico correction) to be 195°C.
The substance, when packaged in volumes of less than 3 m3 (e.g. bigbags), is NOT CLASSIFIED as self heating substance under the CLP and the UN rules.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Autoflammability / Self-ignition temperature at 101 325 Pa:
195 °C

Additional information

REACH end-point

For the substance in a 10 cm cube, the self heating temperature / critical ignition temperature / self ignition temperature was found to be 135°C.

The REACH end-point self ignition temperature in the 20 mm cube, can be calculated from the experimental result using to general approximation formula:

1000 / T = 0.155 * log V + C

In which:

T is the temperature [K]

V is the volume of the sample in the test [m3]

C is a constant.

From the experimental result, it follows that C = 2.92.

For the 20 mm cube theREACH self heating temperature is then calculated to be 470 K or (rounded) 195°C

Following the scheme in the Guidance on the application of the CLP Criteria, chapter 2.11, Figure 2.11.1, it follows that the substance is NOT CLASSIFIED when packaged in volumes of less than 3 m3.

The material is packed in bigbags of nominally 1m3. In practice these are slightly larger but certainly less than 1.5 m3 (44 bags on pallets fit into a standard 40’ sea container of 66 m3). Packaged in bigbags, the material is thus NOT CLASSIFIED.

It may be noted that the results of the 100mm tests performed for the CLP classification (self heating at 140 but not at 120°C) are fully in line with the self heating temperature equaling 135°C in the 100 mm cube, as determined for the derivation of the REACH endpoint.
