According to Mackay Level I model calculations, the main target compartment for dodecanedioic acid will be water (79.4 %) followed by sediment (10.3 %) and soil (10.2 %). The air compartment is not expected to be relevant. The calculated Henry’s law constant of 1.15E-7 Pa m3/mol indicates very low volatility of dodecanedioic acid from surface waters. With an experimental (HPLC) Koc of 40 (dissociated) to 79 (undissociated) l/kg, the sorption potential of dodecanedioic acid to soil or sediment organic matter is expected to be very low (Blume scale).

 

The QSAR calculated rate constant for the OH sensitized photodegradation of dodecanedioic acid is approximately 1.41E-11 cm3/(molecule * s). At 500,000 OH radicals / cm3 (approximate 24-hour mean in central Europe), this corresponds to a half-life of 27.4 hours. Dodecanedioic acid was found readily biodegradable. Biodegradation is expected to be the predominant way of removal from the environment while photolytical or hydrolytical degradation are expected to be of minor importance. The partition coefficient 1-octanol/water of dodecanedioic acid is log Kow = 3.20 at 25 °C, indicating a relevant potential for bioaccumulation. However, additional information particularly on degradability points to an insignificant bioaccumulation potential.
