Peracetic acid can be regarded as readily biodegradable. It will be degraded in sewage treatment plants if the influent concentration is not extremely high (e. g. > 100 ppm). If effluents generated during the production or use of peracetic acid are treated by a waste water treatment plant, no emission of peracetic acid to the aquatic environment is expected.

If peracetic acid reaches surface water, it can be expected to be degraded rapidly, mainly by abiotic rather than biotic decomposition / degradation processes. The same holds true for peracetic acid in contact with sediment and soil, although adsorption to sediment or soil is not likely to occur due to the physicochemical properties of peracetic acid.

Because of the dominance of abiotic decomposition / degradation processes no specific half-lives for biotic degradation can be derived. Instead, the half-lives listed under "Abiotic degradation" are used as input parameter for the environmental exposure assessment.
