Description of key information

Peracetic acid is an organic peroxide with oxidising properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
yes

Additional information

Peracetic acid is an organic peroxide with oxidising properties. According to Commission Directive 2001/59/EC, "any organic peroxide or preparation thereof not already classified as explosive is classified as oxidizing if the peroxide or its formulation contains -more that 5% organic peroxide or -more than 0.5% available oxygen from the organic peroxides, and more than 5% hydrogen peroxide."

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on oxidising properties of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification: The substance is an organic peroxide and is therefore not considered to be classified as oxidising liquid.
