Description of key information

A weight of evidence has been used to conclude on the short term toxicity to algae.

From experimental data and a QSAR prediction, the moste conservative value has been selected.

This is the predicted 96h Algae QSAR : EC 50= 11.1mg/l.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
11.1 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
2.7 mg/L

Additional information

Two long-term tests were reported in the RAR (2008).

NOEC-values of 2.7 and 31 mg/l were reported for blue-green and green algae, respectively.

The algae test results are based on 8-day tests which are not fully equivalent to algae growth inhibition data from standard tests measuring the impact on exponentially growing algae and not comparable to current guideling duration (72h) .

Reference to a study on furfural has been found in a screening document by Environment Canada (Sept 2011). A study on green alga (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) for 96h shows an EC50 of 29 mg/L. This value is very much in line with the QSAR prediction of 11.1 mg/L, further supporting the use of the QSAR.
