First-aid measures

4.1. Description of first aid measures

General advice

The following recommendations in respect of first aid and therapy should be made available to all First Aid Officers and Doctors, who could be called upon to render first aid, before work with cyanide/hydrocyanic acid is started. If accident occurs or if person feels unwell, call the ambulance immediately (keyword: cyanide). Show label or safety data sheet.First aider needs to protect himself.When handling larger quantities it is recommended to arrange a rescue chain.In case of external emergencies immediately inform doctor on call, fire brigade and police.Move casualty to fresh air outside the danger zone immediately using self-protection with respiratory protection and suitable protective clothing (should be stored inside the truck in case of transportation).Remove contaminated soaked clothing immediately and dispose of safely.

Inhalation

Move subject to fresh air and keep him calm. Call a physician immediately. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. No artificial respiration, mouth-to-mouth or mouth to nose. Use suitable instruments/apparatus.

Skin contact

Highly toxic. May be fatal if absorbed through the skin. After contact with skin, wash immediately with copious amounts of water sufficient to remove all cyanide. All known cyanide exposures should be observed for systemic cyanide intoxication. Flush wetted skin thoroughly with plenty of water - including burns or other open wounds. Symptoms may include pink or brick red skin color with possible profuse sweating. Keep calm and protect against heat loss. Call a physician immediately. Afterwards local treatment with polyethylene glycol-400 in hospital.

Eye contact

Immediately flush with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting upper and lower lids occasionally. Get medical attention immediately. If physician is not immediately available, continue flushing with water. Do not use chemical antidote. Protect unharmed eye. Immediate further treatment in eye clinic/by eye doctor. continue rinsing eye until arrival at ophthalmic hospital. All cyanide eye exposures should be observed and evaluated for possible systemic cyanide intoxication. May be absorbed rapidly through eye exposure to cause systemic toxicity.

Ingestion

Call emergency doctor immediately (alarm report: cyanide / hydro-cyanic acid poisoning ).

Do NOT induce vomiting. Call a physician immediately. All ingestion exposures should be evaluated by a physician. Only if patient is fully conscious and no other symptoms are present, have the mouth rinsed with water and with instructions for the patient not to swallow the water. Treatment and first aid measures should be administered according to symptoms.

4.3. Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

If poisoned casualty still breathes regularly and is not unconscious let him/her rest comfortably with protection against heat

loss.Avoid any strain for the poisoned victim during treatment.In any case make the casualty inhale oxygen, especially if

he/she is unconscious and respiration is still regular.Oxygen supply must be absolutely maintained !In case of

unconsciousness, disordered respiration or respiratory arrest, immediate intensive artificial respiration o n l y with

respiration bag or special respiration by doctor on call must be supplied.Specific therapy/antidote: 4-DMAP, sodium

thiosulfate, if permitted, otherwise any other preparations against hydrocyanic acid poisoning that are permitted in the

respective countries.

Fire-fighting measures

5.1. Extinguishing media

potassium carbonate - formation of hydrogen cyanide !)

5.2. Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

5.3. Advice for firefighters

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus.

Use extinguishing measures that are appropriate to local circumstances and the surrounding environment. Keep out unprotected persons. Containers exposed to heat (fire) may build up pressure. Cool by splashing with water. Closed container may rupture if strongly heated. Prevent fire extinguishing water from contaminating surface water or the ground water system. Ensure there are sufficient retaining facilities for water used to extinguish fire. Water used to extinguish fire should not enter drainage systems, soil or stretches of water. Fire residues and contaminated fire extinguishing water must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations.

Accidental release measures

6.1. Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Keep out unprotected persons. Assure sufficient ventilation. Use personal protective clothing. Do not breathe vapours or spray mist. As a rule, work only with respiratory protective equipment. Keep away sources of ignition. Evacuate the vicinity. Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Keep people away from and upwind of spill/leak.

6.2. Environmental precautions

Do not allow entrance in sewage water, soil, stretches of water, drainage systems, surface water. If the product contaminates rivers and lakes or drains inform respective authorities. Cyanide-containing sewage water and solutions must be decontaminated before entering a public canal network or stretch of water.

6.3. Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Larger quantities: Remove mechanically (by pumping). Use explosion-proof equipment! Smaller quantities and/or residues: Contain with absorbent material (e.g. sand, diatomaceous earth, acid absorbent, universal absorbent or sawdust). Dispose of in accordance with regulations. Cyanide-containing sewage water and solutions must be decontaminated before entering a public canal network or stretch of water.

Handling and storage

7.1. Precautions for safe handling

Safe handling advice

Keep container tightly closed. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. Provide good room ventilation even at ground level (vapours are heavier than air). Contamination with bases must be absolutely avoided. Take precautionary measures against static discharges. Acetone cyanohydrin must always be kept slightly acidic. Access only for technical experts. Follow all SDS/label precautions even after container is emptied because it may retain product residues. Keep locked up. The product should only be handled by trained personnel. Use permissible in closed systems only. Handle and transfer product in closed systems only (gas displacement device). Ensure that apparatus and pipelines are free from leaks. Do not ventilate into the open. Suitable loading and unloading device required.

Advice on protection against fire and explosion

Keep away from sources of ignition --- No smoking. Take precautionary measures against static discharges. In the event of fire, cool the endangered containers with water. Vapours are heavier than air and may spread along floors. When heated above the flash point and/or during spraying (atomizing), ignitible mixtures may form in air. Use only explosion-proof equipment.

7.2. Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Requirements for storage areas and containers

Keep only in the original container in a cool, well-ventilated place. Fill the container by approximately 95% only. Keep away from open flames, hot surfaces and sources of ignition. Avoid sun rays, heat, heat effect. Keep locked up. Keep container tightly closed. Monitoring of ambient air necessary.

Advice on common storage

Do not store together with alkalies. Do not store together with oxidizing substances. Do not store together with highly flammable solid substances. Do not store together with self-igniting materials or substances.

German storage class

8.2. Exposure controls

For monitoring procedures refer for instance to "Empfohlene Analysenverfahren für Arbeitsplatzmessungen", Schriftenreihe der Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz and "NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods", National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Refill and handle product only in closed system. Leak detection recommended Do not add wastewater to a biological wastewater treatment plant Minimization of emissions by means of suitable technical measures such as flanges and valves with low leakage rates, recirculation of vapours. All precautionary measures indicated have to be observed.

The substance must be handled under strictly controlled conditions in accordance with Article 17/18 of the REACH regulation.

Protective measures

Do not breathe vapours. Absolutely avoid contact with the eyes and/or skin. No eating, drinking, smoking, or snuffing tobacco at work. All precautionary measures indicated have to be observed. Risk assessment and risk monitoring of all work places required. Health, Safety and Emergency Management System recommended. Regular safety training is a must. Written approval necessary in case of non-routine jobs, e.g. maintenance activities.

Ensure that eye flushing systems and safety showers are located close to the working place.

Hygiene measures

Store work clothing separately. Take off all contaminated clothing immediately. Follow the usual good standards of occupational hygiene. Clean skin thoroughly after work; apply skin cream. Take off clothing and shoes contaminated with product. Clean before reuse.

Respiratory protection

Do not inhale vapour, aerosols, mist., If open handling is unavoidable:, short term: filter appliance, combination filter AB/P3, wear a self contained respiratory apparatus.

Disposal considerations

13.1. Waste treatment methods

Product

Waste is hazardous. It must be disposed of in accordance with the regulations after consultation of the competent local authorities and the disposal company in a suitable and licensed facility. Strictly controlled conditions during disposal or treatment to air, wastewater and waste. Bring wastewater containing AOX for professional disposal. Disposal according to local authority regulations. Do not add wastewater to a biological wastewater treatment plant.

Uncleaned packaging

Contaminated packaging should ideally be emptied; it can then be recycled after having been decontaminated. Packaging that cannot be cleaned should be disposed of professionally. Uncontaminated packaging may be taken for recycling.
