Description of key information

Flammability data were read across from substances with compatible structure to those in Category C4, high 1,3 -butadiene (≥ 0.1%): But-1-ene (106-9 -9), 2-methylpropene (115-11-7) and 1,3 butadiene. The lower and upper explosion limits ranged from 1.6-12%.

Additional information

Measured data on the flammability of the members of category C4, high 1,3 -butadiene ( 0.1%) were not available. Therefore read across from handbook data (CRC 2008) from comparable substances [2-methylpropene: gas LEL 1.8 % - UEL 9.6 %, 1,3–butadiene: gas LEL 2.0 % - UEL 12 %, but-1–ene: gas UEL 1.6 % to UEL10 %] was deemed appropriate as they have a similar structure to the category members and so physico-chemical properties are predicted to be similar. No information on the method used was reported in the handbook. However, this information is taken from the CRC handbook (2008) which is a reliable peer reviewed handbook and so can be considered reliable and suitable for use as the key study for this endpoint. The lower and upper explosion limits are 1.6 - 12 %.

Based on the explosion limits for the category members (1.6 to 12 %), all category members are classified as Flammable gas category 1.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The lower and upper explosion limits are 1.6 - 12%.The data would result in a classification of category 1 flammable gas and the hazard statement 'extremely flammable gas'.
