Description of key information

There was no inhibition of activated sludge at any of the concentrations of Silicon Nitride tested. Therefore EC50 was >300 mg/L.

An Activated Sludge Respiration Inhibition Test (ASRIT) was conducted (ARC Seibersdorf research GmbH, 2005) to determine the effect of Silicon Nitride on microorganisms. The test was conducted according to OECD test guideline 209, EC Directive 87/302 (method C11), and in compliance with GLP. Activated sludge was taken from a sewage treatment plant which treated predominantly domestic waste. Cultures were exposed to Silicon Nitride at concentrations of 7.0, 16.0, 47.2, 118.8, 303.8 and 304.4 mg/L. There was no inhibition of the activated sludge at any of the test substance concentrations. The respiration rates of all samples with the test substance were in the range of 97.1 to 105.8% of the control value.
