Description of key information

A. mellifera L. Contact: LD50> 116 µg/bee, Oral: LD50> 75 µg/bee

A. rhopalosiphi LR50> 250.60 kg/ha

One sub-acute test was found with Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten which was considered to be valid: LR50= 84.4 kg/ha.

The NOECs for two long-term tests were all 250 kg/ha.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Several valid studies were performed all under the Pesticides regulation. It is not very likely that organisms will be exposed in this way when sodium chlorate is used as described under REACH. Therefore, these endpoints are not used for the Risk Assessment.

Two valid acute studies were found performed with Apis mellifera L. and Aphidius rhopalosiphi.

The results were as follows:

One sub-acute test was found with Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten which was considered to be valid:LR50= 84.4 kg/ha.

One chronic study with Aleochara bilineata Gyllenhal was considered valid. Another study with Chrysoperla carnea was considered valid with restrictions because no dose response relationship was observed for mortality, probably because sodium chlorate was hygroscopic. The fecundity of the organisms was not affected at the highest concentration tested and therefore this value could be used. The NOECs found for these studies were all 250 kg/ha.

The 34 days test was performed on soil. The NOEC can be recalculated to kg/kg soil when a soil density of 1700 g/dm3is assumed. The surface of the pots used in the test was 0.01584 m2. With an application rate of 250.95 kg/ha the application per pot surface was 398 mg/pot. The volume of the soil in the pots was 0.6 dm3which is equal to 1.020 kg soil.The NOEC is 390 mg/kg soil.
