Not explosive according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP regulation) and UN Globally Harmonised System (GHS).

Additional information

In accordance with section 1 of REACh Annex XI, study for explosive properties is deemed unnecessary based on the experience in handling, testing and use of the substance.

In addition, a fully reliable experimental study, conducted according to a recognized EC method and under GLP, is available. Sodium chlorate did not show explosive properties in the A.14 tests. This means that according to Directive 67/548/EEC this material is not considered as explosive.

Moreover DSC conducted on the substance showed no exothermic event till 160°C and the EU A.16 test (TNO, 2004) showed no exothermic effects during the experiment till 400°C.

Note also that Sodium chlorate has a harmonised classification (index No. 017-005-00-9, ATP0)  and it is not classified for explosive properties like in ADR 2019 - UN1495.

Therefore, explosive properties are not anticipated for the registered substance and the acceptance procedure for Class 1 explosives shall not apply. No further testing was considered.

It should be mentioned that this material may become explosive when mixed with combustible materials.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the information indicated above, no classification is needed for explosivity according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP regulation) and UN Globally Harmonised System (GHS).
