Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The calculated half-lives are in the range of 15.4 hours for octanoic acid (C8) to 5.7 hours for octadecanoic acid (C18).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No experimental data on photolysis in air is available for fatty acids.

However comprehensive modeled data are provided in the OECD SIDS (2009) for aliphatic fatty acids of C8-C22 carbon chain length. In the EPI Suite model a hydroxyl radical reaction of 1.5 * 106cm3hydroxyl radical concentration at 25 °C is assumed. The data show a decreasing photodegradation half-life with increasing chain length.Unsaturated fatty acids undergo photolysis faster than saturated. The half-life declines with the number of double bounds. The calculated half-lives are in the range of 15.4 hours for octanoic acid (C8) to 5.7 hours for octadecanoic acid (C18).
