No experimental data are available on the hydrolytic stability of the category members Fatty Acids. Due to the ready biodegradability of the category members, hydrolysis testing is not required. Based on manufacturing experience with liquid cleaning products, it is known that Fatty Acids are stable in water (SIDS, 2009).

Based on EPI suite modelled data assuming a hydroxyl reaction at 25°C and a hydroxyl radical concentration of 1.5x106/cm³, aliphatic acids are subject to photodegradation in air (SIDS, 2009). The photodegradation half-lives in air decrease with increasing chain lengths and range from 15.4 hours for octanoic acid (C8) to 5.7 hours for octadecanoic acid (C18).

Direct photolysis is not expected to contribute appreciably to the overall breakdown rate in water and soil, since the environmental degradation of these substances is predominantly of biotic nature.
