Description of key information

Trichloroethylene undergoes reactions with hydroxyl radicals in the atmosphere.

The half life of trichloroethylene due to this reaction, based on a 12-hr day with a OH radical concentartion of 1.5E6 OH/cm3 is 13.3 days.

Hydrolysis is not expected to be an important removal process for trichloroethylene.

Degradation of trichloroethylene in water by hydrolysis is very slow, with half-lives reported in the range from 10.7 months to 1.3 million years.

Photolysis is not likely to be a significant removal process for trichloroethylene.

Trichloroethylene (1 mg/l) in water was degraded by 52-56% after one year in the dark and by 70-79% in the presence of sunlight.
