Biodegradation in water: screening tests

In a CO2 -Evolution test according to EU Method C.4-C, Cyclohexane, oxidized aq. ext. was degraded by 79% after 28 days, indicating readily biodegradability of the test substance (BASF AG 1997). However, the OECD criteria of a 10 -day window was not met. It should be considered that, Cyclohexane, oxidized aq. ext. is an aqueous mixture of various dicarbonic acids and oil. For mixtures however, OECD (2006) states that "If a test on the mixture is performed and it is anticipated that a sequential biodegradation of the individual structures is taking place, then the 10-day window should not be applied to interpret the results of the test." Therefore, Cyclohexane, oxidized aq. ext. has been classified as readily biodegradable.

Due the high mineralization, no further biodegradation testing (simulation tests in water and sediment, and biodegradation testing in soil) is required for registration under REACh.
