Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Abiotic degradation

Tetramethylsilane is expected to be hydrolytically stable under environmentally-relevant conditions. The calculated half-life for reaction with hydroxyl radicals in air is 26.7 days.

Biotic degradation

A reliable ready biodegradation study is available for tetramethylsilane, which indicates no significant biodegradation in water. Biodegradation simulation tests in water, sediment or soil are technically not feasible due to the high volatility of the substance and its slight solubility in water. In addition, the high vapour pressure and the slight solubility in water indicate that exposure of the soil and aquatic compartments will be minimal.

Table 4.1.3. Degradation rates

Degradation rate in water:

Hydrolytically stable. No significant biodegradation.

Degradation rate in sediment:

Not expected to biodegrade in sediment.

Degradation rate in soil:

Not expected to biodegrade in soil.

Degradation rate in air:

May undergo indirect phototransformation; calculated half-life for reaction with hydroxyl radicals in air is 26.7 days.
