Description of key information

Metal carboxylates such as zinc bis(2-ethylhexanoate) are substances consisting of a metal cation and a carboxylic acid anion. Based on the solubility of zinc bis(2-ethylhexanoate) in water, a complete dissociation of zinc bis(2-ethylhexanoate) resulting in zinc cations and 2-ethylhexanoic acid anions may be assumed under environmental conditions. Abiotic degradation is not relevant for zinc cations. Zinc cations and 2-ethylhexanoic acid anions are not subject to hydrolysation as both ions lack hydrolysable groups. Therefore, abiotic degradation via hydrolysis is not considered to significantly affect the fate of zinc bis(2-ethylhexanoate) in the environment. After evaporation or exposure to the air, 2-ethylhexanoic acid will be slowly degraded by photochemical processes with OH-radicals.
