Description of key information

Sediment toxicity is considered not to be relevant for assessment since tantalum is not exposed to this compartment and the substance is in addition not considered to be environmentally toxic.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Elemental tantalum is insoluble in water and thus not bioavailable, it is physiologically inert and harmless. Due to the low bioavailability the bioaccumulation potential is negligible and tantalum metal is considered not to cause any hazardous effects. Furthermore, entry into the environment, from industrial use, is unlikely to occur. Thus, long-term testing with sediment organisms is considered to be scientifically unjustified.
